Il 19 agosto di dieci anni fa un violento attacco alla sede delle Nazioni Unite a Baghdad provocò la morte di 22 persone, tra cui il rappresentante speciale delle Nazioni Unite in Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. In memoria delle vittime di questo attentato e di tutti gli altri operatori umanitari che si trovano in prima linea, il 19 agosto è stato dichiarato Giornata umanitaria mondiale dall’Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite.
August 19th: World Humanitarian Day
Ten years ago today, 22 aid workers were killed while serving in Baghdad. On 19 August, we honour them and all humanitarians who have lost their lives helping people in need. And we acknowledge those who continue to make sacrifices and face danger to provide aid to communities affected by conflict and disaster.
